Last month a Baton Rouge television station noted a Kansas aircraft manufacturer was interested in moving its manufacturing operations (and a thousand or so high-end jobs) to Baton Rouge. The Governor of Kansas has threatened a special legislative session to prevent the company from leaving. Huh? Well it is tv news, let your imagination supply the rest of the story.

The New York Times reports at least ten law schools, including Tulane have adjusted their grading systems upward - retroactively! Largely viewed as a way to rescue recent grads floundering in a tough job market, it seems band-aid weird to me. Teaching students how to provide value to employers and clients rather than grading reform would be a more substantive fix.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has issued its May jobs/unemployment report. Little has changed from April. Unemployment 9.1%, 54,000 jobs created.

Ezra Kline has an interesting analysis of options to curtail the decline of the middle class. His suggestion: invest in education, particularly in community colleges.  And the New York Times has a story about permanent unemployment at age 50. Happy Friday!

According to a report released by Automatic Data Processing (ADP), a private payroll servicing firm, December private sector jobs creation topped a whopping 300,000. There are skeptics. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) official report will issue Friday.
